Face Lift

Face Lift is one of the plastic surgery procedures that guarantee the most impressive results. A precisely performed Face Lift makes the features much more youthful, smoother, tighter and more balanced.

To Whom Is Face Lift Recommended?

Besides the natural aging process, genetic and environmental factors also affect the appearance of the skin and the texture of the connective tissues. Nowadays, there is a lot of stress on people, which unfortunately leaves its mark on the face as well. Different “minimally invasive” treatments, which are non-surgical and less burdensome for the body, can be used to alleviate the unwanted signs of aging, depending on individual conditions and needs: Botox, Hyaluronic Acid or combined face rejuvenation are popular for a good reason, as they mean an effective option for this, probably delaying the need for an invasive Face Lift.

However, an “angry” and tired forehead, drooping of the eyelids and the corners of the mouth, a swollen undereye area, a sagging mid-face, and a “turkey neck” tell us that complex therapy is needed which require deep tissue involvement. This is Face Lift, a facial plastic surgery, which starts from the level of the connective tissues, stretches and removes the skin excess to give a more youthful and beautiful look.

Like with most surgeries, some chronic illnesses (eg. diabetes or high blood pressure) pose an increased risk here, including smoking.

The Steps of Face Lift

Face Lift is not really one kind of surgery that is performed the same way on every patient. Rather, it is a collective term for operative options that contribute to the recovery of younger facial contours by stretching the facial connective tissues and removing excess skin.

A carefully performed Face Lift takes 2 to 4 hours, typically performed under general anesthesia. According to the patient’s state and requirements, after thorough consultation with the plastic surgeon, it includes Temple Lift and Forehead Lift, but can also be extended to the neck (Neck Lift).

The incision begins at the temples, in front of the ears, then ends on the back of the head with a curve behind the ears so that with the help of meticulous work, the skin can be prepared from the cheek almost to the “laugh lines” and the chin, and about 5 cm below and behind the ear. This is required to access the collective tissue layer to be stretched to remove the excess. Usually, we perform liposuction under the chin.

In all cases, the incisions are closed with premium quality sewing materials and plastic surgery stitches to ensure aesthetic, fine line scars that are just a shade lighter than the original skin color in the natural lines of the face, so you can hardly notice them.

Basic Types of Face Lift

  • Deep Plane Lift is stretching of the superficial fascial system for natural and tension-free facial expressions.
  • SMAS Lift gives just as nice and natural results but a bit less extensive than Deep Plane Lift because it does not involve the tissues under the superficial fascial system.
  • Short Scar Lift requires smaller incisions which in some cases also suffices to smoothen the skin and the tissues responsible for sagging.
  • MACS or XMACS mean “Minimal Access Cranial Suspension” technique. A type of Short Scar Lift and is less invasive because the incision extends to the ear.
  • Endoscopic Face Lift is a method when the plastic surgeon inserts a small camera attached to a thin cannula from one incision while one of the other incisions he or she make the necessary tissue changes, s, with a considerably reduced effect compared to the other methods above.
  • Midface Lift involves only the middle third of the face, contributing to lifting sagging cheeks and smoothing the wrinkles between the nose and the mouth.

After Face Lift

As the tissues are deeply affected in these procedures, the recovery time depends significantly on the technique used, the preparedness and experience of the plastic surgeon, and the patient’s individual healing ability, varying between one and a few weeks. Fortunately, the area of the face is healing very well thanks to its abundant blood supply. The bandage is removed on the 7th or 8th day, after which the hair can be washed. The last suture removal is expected after 10-14 days, then the use of cosmetics and the face care routine is allowed.

The size of the surface affected may cause some swelling and discoloration, which can be alleviated by compression. We advise getting back to work 10 days later. Mild physical exercise after 2 weeks, while sports are recommended only after 3 weeks. Sunbathing and using a tanning bed is forbidden for 6-8 weeks. Avoid very spicy foods and alcohol consumption.

After the recovery period, our patients are happy to see their naturally youthful, fresh and smooth face, maintaining their facial characters and their mimicry, which means a long-term anti-aging result.

Face Lift can be substituted or supplemented by Facial Rejuvenation with Fat Transfer (also known as Fat Grafting or Lipofilling).
